| | A small group of about 14 gathered at the Carr's in an attempt to match wine to the title for this event (still not exactly sure where this "Sprightly"term came from). If nothing else the term allowed for a real mix of wine and the participants did a great job in bringing a very unique selection of wines. Not only where there many grape variatels but almost all of the major wine regions were represented. Wines: 1. Giesen Sauvignon Blanc 2003 Marlborough NZ 2. Richard Sanz Palacio de Castilla Menade 2003 Rueda SP 3. Gazela Vinho Verde Portugal 4. Bosc dla Rei Moscato d'Asti 2003 Beni di Batasiolo 5. Bertani Due Uve (Pinot Grigio/Sauv. Blanc) Verona Italy IGT 2003 6. Horton Sparkling Viognier Virginia 1998 7. Taittinger Millesime 1998 8. Flagstone Noon Gun 6 grape blend S. Africa 2004 9. Taburno Falanghina Italy 2002 10. Valley Vineyards Bicentennial Blanc 2003 11. Blue Fish Riesling Rheinlandpfalz Germany 2004 12. Louis Drescher Blanc de Blancs Cava - Chardonnay and Parellada Spain NV 13. Willakenzie Pinot Gris Oregon 2003 14. South River Pinot Grigio Grand River Valley Ohio 2002
We voted for a 'most sprightly', and the results were: 1. Moscato 2. Giesen Sauv Blanc 3. Vinho Verde
If we had voted a 'least sprightly' it would probably have been the Willakenzie, which at 14.5% alcohol was too full of body to be sprightly, but was along with the Taittinger and the Falanghina one of the best wines of the lot.
An awesome food selection - pot stickers, wild rice and chicken salad, spicy corn omelets, salmon, and fresh asparagus from Farmer John Branstrator - were great companions to these fun wines. |
