A small but energetic group assembled Saturday, February 4th to square off for the contest. Referee Dick Fruehwald had the playing field decked out half in Steelers Black and Yellow and half in Seahawks Blue and Silver.
On the deck were four pairs of wine in brown bags. The task was to determine the varietal and whether it was from the East or West, two points for each wine, a total of 16 possible points. Winner of the Challenge was Pama Mitchell with 14 points and second was Jean Huwer with 12 points. The top five scores received their choice from an array of valuable prizes. The wines in the Challenge were: Presque Isle Chardonnay | Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay | Presque Isle Reflections | Cayuga/Riesling blend | Columbia Cellermaster’s Riesling | Presque Isle Cabernet Sauvignon | Bremerton Langhorn Creek Shiraz | Peter Lehmann Barossa Valley Shiraz |
Special thanks go to Lexie Hartung frm the Pittsburgh Chapter for expediting the Pennsylvania wines. The Challenge did not end with wine. Food for the evening was identical pan pizzas from hometown favorite, LaRosa’s, pitted against West Coast favorite, Papa John’s. The pizza was tasted blind and even though the LaRosa’s won for delivery, arriving ten minutes before Papa John’s, there were equal votes for quality/favorite. When you miss a tasting, you miss a lot. One final note the tasting between the two groups of wines were so close that an impartial official was called to make the final decision. The picture below captured him examining the results closely. I will let you guess the final outcome.
