White Burgundy Notes PDF Print E-mail
Some fans of white Burgundies and other wine-curious folk gathered on Sunday April 17, 2005 at the 1880's Victorian home of Ed and Carol Pfetzing to celebrate the end of tax season and great Spring weather. We met in the backyard and sampled a couple of Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand, where Carol and Ed had recently visited. To begin our tasting we retired to the basement Rathskellar with its stone walls, fireplace, brick arches, and racks of dusty bottles quietly aging. Sampling by pairs, we proceeded through six rounds starting with relatively humble offerings and finishing with elevated bottlings. Afterwards we voted on favorites for quality and value excluding the last two that were generously donated by Dr. Herb Francis. As usual it was hard to vote for only two favorites from such a nice selection. At the conclusion Carol served us a tasty repaste of roasted chicken breast with pasta, baby carrots and salad. Our event ended with two delightful desserts from Le Cezanne pâtisserie. Many thanks to Carol and Ed for a charming afternoon of fine wines and hospitality!

Subjective Notes From One Participant:

1. **½ - acidic-dry, almost chalky, not popular with group

2. *** - light fruit, crisp & mineral, absence of oak

3. *** - prominent fruit nose, fruit in body, has a note of peach/pear, finish comes back very dry, a bit chalky (my #2 V)

4. ***½ - subtle fruit nose with oak under, labanced fruit, has some elegance, oak continues into finish

5. ***½ - odd nose(?) smells like lees & yeast and developed nicely, very rich ripe fruit, full body, some spicy oak, thick in mouth, has some CA character (my #1 V)

6. ***½ - nice balance of fruit & oak, mineral with fruit goes well together

7. ***½ - beautiful oak nose, very balanced with fruit and oak underneath

8. *** - yeasty lees in nose, bright fruit in glycerin mouth, seems like something is missing, overall disappointing

9. **** - complex nose with oak, overall balance, a bit of magic (my #2 Q)

10. ****½ - very aromatic, nose blew up(!), great body, elegant (my #1 Q)

11. *** - very different from the rest

12. ** - sherry notes, light fruit, seems over the hill, similar to aged Champagne that is popular in UK
